Before asking for a repair estimate, prepare six facts: the exact model, what’s wrong, how it happened, any earlier repairs, your warranty or coverage, and what you want from the repair. That short list gives a provider enough to give a real answer instead of a broad range. You don’t need to share your passcode or account details to get a price.
The list works for any provider, and a copy-and-paste message is further down.
The estimate fact sheet
| Fact | Where to find it | Why it affects the estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Exact model | Settings, or the box or receipt | Parts differ between similar-looking models |
| Symptoms | Your own notes and photos | Separates visible damage from faults that need testing |
| Cause and date | Your memory: a drop, liquid or a gradual change | Points to related damage and affects coverage |
| Repair history | Receipts, or Parts and Service History on iPhone | Earlier parts can affect the work and any warranty |
| Coverage | Manufacturer account, plan documents, carrier or card insurance | May change who pays and where the repair must happen |
| Your priorities | Your own decision | Part type, speed and data needs all change the options |
Find the exact model
“iPhone” or “Galaxy” isn’t enough, and even “Pro” or “Ultra” matters. Each brand shows this in Settings:
- iPhone: go to Settings, General, About. Apple’s model identification page helps match a model number to a model name.
- Galaxy: go to Settings, About phone. Samsung also says the model may be printed on the back of the device or found on the packaging, your carrier account or bill of sale (Samsung).
- Screen not working? Check the original box, receipt or carrier account. On many iPhone models the IMEI also appears on the SIM tray, but Apple notes that iPhone 14 models and later have no IMEI engraving (Apple).
An early estimate usually needs only the model. Keep the serial number and IMEI for when a provider has a real need for them, such as checking warranty status or booking the repair, and don’t post them publicly.
Describe the problem so it can be priced
Vague descriptions get vague answers. Say what you see, when it happens and what still works. Include every fault, even small ones. Google, for example, says all damage on a Pixel sent for repair has to be fixed and asks customers to select all issues (Google).
| Instead of | Try |
|---|---|
| Screen is broken | Glass cracked at top left, touch works, no lines or dark patches |
| Battery is bad | Drops to 20% by mid-afternoon; no bulge; Battery Health reads ___% |
| Won’t charge | Charges only at an angle; tried two cables and two chargers; port cleaned; no liquid |
| It got wet | Dropped in a sink for a few seconds on [date]; not charged since; speaker sounds muffled |
If you’ve already tried basic steps, say so. It saves time and may prevent paying for a check you’ve already done. On iPhone, Apple’s charging troubleshooting steps are a sensible starting point. Add two or three clear photos of visible damage, and a short video if the fault is intermittent.
Check earlier repairs and coverage
Tell the provider about any previous repair, even a good one. On iPhone, Parts and Service History appears in Settings, General, About, and shows whether a part is labeled Genuine or Unknown, among other labels (Apple). That’s useful to mention before someone opens the phone.
Check your coverage before asking for a price too, because accidental damage is usually treated differently. Apple’s warranty excludes damage from accidents and liquid contact (Apple warranty), and Google says in-warranty repairs carry no charge while out-of-warranty prices may vary (Google). If you have proof of purchase, keep it handy. Apple says some repairs might require it (Apple).
Decide what you want
Three short answers help a provider quote the right job:
- Parts: do you want manufacturer parts only, or would you consider third-party parts at a lower price?
- Speed: do you need the phone back today, or can you wait for a part?
- Data: is there a current backup? Would it be a problem if the phone had to be erased?
Also say what’s included in your request. If you’d like a price for a case or screen protector, ask for it as a separate line so you can compare the repair itself.
What not to share
An estimate request doesn’t need your phone passcode, account password, verification codes, payment card numbers or private photos. Apple says never to give your Apple Account password, device passcode or account security details to anyone else (Apple). Google says not to share your PIN, password or pattern with the technician when you use Repair Mode (Google).
When you do go ahead with a repair, ask how the provider will test the phone without those details, and use your phone’s repair-protection tools where available.
Copy-and-paste estimate request
Fill in the brackets and delete anything that doesn’t apply.
